Chapter 10: Door Number Seven

Yes, indeed, Charles Taker did seem to be amazed by Amelia. He stopped her once more, that time in front of an open door. Each door bore a number. This one was signed with a four. He brought her closer so that they could observe the session that was occurring. A man with a brown receding hairline sat opposite a male staff member in a lab coat. As they watched, they saw electrodes being placed onto the man’s head, two at the front, two at the back.

“Ernest Hemingway committed suicide after receiving electroconvulsive therapy,” said Charles. “He said that he saw no reason behind erasing his memories, even though he was suffering from depression. You see, in his refusal to undertake the necessary steps toward ridding himself of his past, those painful memories, then his death could have been prevented.”

Amelia listened on as she watched the guy in the lab coat sit on one side of a device that was connected by wire to the electrodes stuck to the man’s head.

“Imagine what would have been if he was able to readjust those parts of his past?” Charles continued. “If he shed those cumbersome leaves from his mind? U-47 may well be the ultimate tool in future psychotherapy. But that just leaves me to question how it is that you know the name of the compound, let alone anything else about U-47?”

Charles turned to Amelia, just as the man in front of them began to be electrocuted. It was a bizarre thing to watch. This man, who so obviously was in pain, also was obvious in his want to be there. To let them send shocks of electricity into his head.

She looked away, unable to watch anymore. A fire began to roar within her gut. At Charles Taker, Carver, the whole town of Amber Falls. Yet, even if that was the case, there was something holding her back. Too many uncertainties to show her full deck of cards. Yeah, it was true that something was going on, something big enough that it had a line of wealthy men and women volunteering themselves to, what looked like, human drug trials. But to what end? “Two years ago, there were reports of a mysterious drug hitting the streets. Causing people to lose their minds.” Give him something, but not everything, Amelia thought.

Charles raised an eyebrow. “Is that so?” he asked, his eyes narrow. “Well,” he spoke again as his last question dissolved into the air, “just like Hemingway, we’ve come a long way since then.”

The guard who had been following them shoved Amelia, told her to move as Charles continued to walk.

“I’m afraid I must make an admittance to you,” Taker told Amelia. “I was watching you on the cameras as you broke into our facility with such brashness the other night. And you know what? I’m so glad that you could join us at such an exciting time. Just when we are on the brink of something truly remarkable, I get given the perfect subject for my trials.
